20th Century Stained Glass Windows Created by Rahway High School Students

Recently, students of Rahway High School Art teacher JoAnne Campanelli, studied the stained glass used in European cathedral windows and replicated the technique using colored tissue paper to adorn the windows of the hallway outside of the art studio.  These attractive windows, however, were not created by art majors with multiple years of study, but rather by students taking Survey of the Arts, a full-year exploratory course that includes terms in Introduction to Art, Introduction to Theatre, The History of the Broadway Play, and Music Appreciation. This new course allows students to meet the arts requirement for graduation while also discovering an area where they might choose to take further elective courses.

Student Selected as 1st Chair in New Jersey All State Symphonic Band

Gabriel Rolon, a sophomore at Rahway High School, recently auditioned and was accepted into the New Jersey All State Symphonic Band as first chair in percussion.  This is a rare honor, the third such student in the past fifteen years.  To attain this honor, Gabriel competed against 150 of the best instrumentalists from schools all over the state. The All State Bands will perform at NJPAC on Saturday, February 25 conducted by Dr. Cynthia Johnston Turner from Cornell University.  This performance will follow students gathering at Rutgers in New Brunswick for two days of rehearsals.

Rahway High School Students Prepare for High Stakes Testing

On March 6, 7, and 8, juniors at Rahway High School and throughout New Jersey will take the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) which measures the knowledge and skills needed to be able to be a productive citizen and to succeed on the job, in college, or in the military. Students are required to pass the HSPA to graduate from high school. Freshmen and sophomores take another test that predicts how likely it is that they will pass the HSPA as juniors. To help students prepare for this testing, Rahway has instituted a number of practices. Students are being instructed in small-group tutorial sessions once a week.

Senior/Alumni Tea
On Friday, January 6, several members of the Rahway High School Class of 2011 joined current seniors for the annual Senior/Alumni Tea.  During this event, recent RHS alumni volunteered their time to speak with seniors about their transition from high school to college life.  Alumni in attendance represented post-secondary programs such as New York University, Loyola University New Orleans, Rutgers University and the NJ Stars Program. Among the topics discussed were expectations from professors, how to handle the newfound freedom that accompanies taking college classes and time management skills.
